Review of The Room

RoomRoom by Emma Donoghue
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first novel that I am reading till completion of a foreign author. I think I was able to read it mainly because of the language. The book is narrated entirely from a 5 year olds perspective and because of the same reason the language was very simple. I never had to go and look up even a single word.

The main reason for me to read this novel is because of the movie. I have never read the book first before watching the movie. I wanted to do that one time. So next stop is to find a theater where they still show the movie.

The novel is completely interesting. Ma's just ma , her actual name is just the other name for jack. And he wonders if men are called men then if he and ma should be called roomers. He wonders why some things in tv are real while the other things are not. Ma had a very hard time explaining him things. Infact everybody is having hard time explaining something to jack. Because jack is completely from a different world.

Such an interesting theme narrated to perfection. It is hardly about the rape-victim but it talks more about survival , love , Motherhood .

The imitation Game

Yes its late. But I cant see another movie without writing about this one. I wanted to watch it ever since I heard about it. Especially because I heard Benedict cumberbatch is playing the main role in the film. I am a huge fan of Sherlock and couldn't wait to watch him playing Alan Turing.

To my surprise from the first scene of the movie I didn't  see even a shadow sherlock in Benedict's face , It was Alan , The Alan Turing trying to break Enigma. Though Sherlock and Alan Turing shares a lot in common , Bennedict did an extra ordinary job in differentiating both the characters to a large extend.

The movie wet my eyes many times. The scene in which young Alan get to know about his friends death from the provost and his struggle in vain to not show his emotions out.

The climax scene which shows the mental and physical deterioration of Alan because of the chemical castration mandated by the court , I wished only if his mind was not effected , Only if !

And few of the dialogues that I will take out of the movie without any effort will be

"Humans find violence deeply satisfying , But remove the satisfaction the act becomes largely hollow. "

Bird Man

No You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We're all part of the same compost heap. We're all singing, all dancing crap of the world -Fight Club

We all know this yet we all refuse to believe. We all want to be remembered , fight for being relevant often forgetting everybody else in the world is after the same thing. This movie tries to tell us the same message in a entirely different way.

The movie is shot continuously with continuously moving camera. I couldn't even spot a single cut from one scene to the other. When I say the movie is shot continuously it is very much engaging as well. Its packed with a lot of take away dialogues, Performances from Edward Norton , Emma Stone and Michael Keaton which made me hold my breath and still I feel that I cant didn't get enough of it.

Possible Spoilers Ahead , Proceed with caution ;)

Regan is a super hero in real life. But only when  nobody is watching. He can turn off the tv with a gesture, lift anything or move anything , fly around , gravity doesn't apply to him . He is a super hero in real life but when nobody is watching. He considers him above all the other silly humans. And he is worried more about his relevance in the society than anything else. The movie makes it clear what the film is about in with just one incident which Regan narrates

Regan and George clooney happen to be on the same flight once and the it started shaking in mid air. Regan was not worried about his life or about his fellow passengers. He was thinking about how George Clooney's death would take the front page of next days news paper and his death might not even make it to the last page.

Regan decides to be relevant again and the play he directs in broadway is his last chance to fame and stardom . The film depicts the struggles he goes through during the making of the movie. While he want the actors in his play to be the best. He doesnt want them to be better than he is . He does not want anybody to steal his thunder. He gets furious if any one does.

Mike (Norton) doesnt give a flying F**k about anything at all. He is charming, witty, alcoholic Ladies man traits of a complete artist one would say. He doesnt consider Regan to be a real actor.  Introduction scene of Mike went quite above my head. With a lot of things happening around Mike jumped right in centre of the movie and then on he quite stole the entire show whenever he got a chance.

When Sam (Emma Ston) was talking to her dad  ( Keaton)about the little pot smoking incident , the camera was moving all around her face. Some times it was even moving too close to the lips and Emma was not pretty any more , If Emma stone cannot be pretty  nobody can be pretty when the camera is that close. But that made the dialogue delivery a lot more memorable.

Git Rebase behind the scenes

Git rebase is one of the most recently used command if you are using git/githib for your version control.

To pull in from the central repository we use a

git pull --rebase

to rebase current branch to another branch we use

git checkout <branch1>
git rebase <branch2>

But many people don't know what exactly a git rebase is doing. So I thought I wouldn't I write down what I found. So here is an example

a -> b -> c-> d (master)
| |
| k (team2)
e -> f -> g (team1)

So I am in the branch team2 currently , and I want the changes of team1 in the branch team2. What would I do? obviously I would go for a

git rebase team1

What will be the end result?

The git log from team2 would print the below
a ->e -> f -> g -> b -> c-> d ->k

Holy cow ! how did that happen?? That's what git rebase does , it will go up the hierarchy to find a common parent commit and then apply the changes from the branch to be rebased in this case the team1's commits. Then ontop of that all the commits from the current branch is re applied. So that is how rebasing is done.

How can she sit there Laugh and Look so beautiful

It was painful not to talk to her . I never told her that I liked her so much and I am sure she knows. But AM I ? Am I sure that she knows? No , the fact is I don't know anything about her, and that was the interesting part. I was talking to her at least for an hour every day since more than four years. I always thought what is it that  in her so that I never let her go . Some people are like that , they are just too close to heart that they could be torturing it real bad but its harder to let go because they have become an essential part of it alredy.

And we rode through the highest motor-able road in the world !

Its not more than an year or so since I learned how to ride a bike properly , And I am not a pro yet ! But hey I already rode through the highest motor-able road in the entire world. Guess what more records I will have in my name two or three years down the line :P

We were eight techies ( still don't know what that means)  who were out for celebrating their vacation in the heaven on earth Kashmir So it was on the fifth day of our trip and we decided to make it bit more adventurous, We decide to ride from Leh to Nubra valley through the highest motorable road in the world  (yes you are going to read that phrase a hundred more times if you are planning to read it to the end :P). It is about 180 kilometres from Leh to Nubra valley and

Everything happens for good

Driving bike through an empty road feels so good , that is why even after putting the indicator to take the left from where my house is just 200 meters or something I changed my decision and drove ahead , making the fellow road mates behind me go " HONK HONK ! "

Singing songs while riding bike has become more of a hobby for me , No no , that doesn't mean I can sing. I enjoy my songs , I enjoy my voice and I often wonder why people doesn't like me singing,  that was until I tried recording and hearing my own voice again ;) coming to the point , I was singing inside my helmet and the not so cool but kind of ok ok breeze was blowing into my t shirt which blew it like a baloon. Anyway  I couldn't enjoy the ride for so long , I was stopped  by a police van which happens here in trivandrum usually, I had all the documents ready with me but then It spoiled the mood.

The sub inspector should be a native of Trivandrum , Or else he might have spent a lot of time in Trivadnrum that his malayalam accent adapted.

Inspector : When did you buy this bike ?
Me:  Should have been at least six months .
Inspector  : Is this bike yours for sure?
Me : Why?
Inspector  : Because this bike was bought an year back and its insurance is expired !
Me : Oh ! God ! I might have forgotten to renew it ! Sorry ! and I easily loose track of time ! God !
Inspector  : That will be 500rs fine
Me : Yeah ! Yeah !

And yeah he starts writing the ticket ! He wrote a ticket for 100 and I paid him 500. Wait a minute ! Now that's not nice !

Me : Sir you have written the ticket for 100rs only
Inspector  : Oh! Sorry I was writing a lot of tickets for not wearing helmet
Me : oh!
Inspector  : Thanks son ! Otherwise it would have been a problem for me .
Me : No Problem sir.
Inspector : I could have written you a ticket for 100 , but then If I do like that you might take this lightly and wont pay the insurance on time. You know if in case some accident happens and somebody dies , You will have to pay a lot of money , In one such case the sum was as high as 14 crores.
Me : oh! god! I should pay this stuff asap then .
Inspector: Yeah better you do that!

I was done riding and headed back home, blaming my head for not heading right back to home and going for this spectacular RIDE. I took the turn to my home and I saw  a bike lying down , shattered glass and blood in the road , clearly some accident. And somebody from the crowd told me a bike hit this young boy who was playing and both of them are taken to hospital. Sigh!!

The thought that this could have happened to me if I would have taken the turn right away and then my insurance was also expired made my heart loose one or two beats,  hopefully this guy who got into the accident should have a valid third party insurance.

Some times you will have to believe and some times you clearly understands that everything happens for good.
